SunnyKen > May 25th
We arrived vey early in the morning (after leaving late on May 23rd), and after breakfast and a shower decided to start exploring Sydney. This view is of downtown from The Rocks - the area around the quays in the harbor - our hotel was the Four Seasons, the brick tower in the center of the picture.
In quick succession, we learned some important things: Look right, then left to cross the street. Pubs don't have Fosters - it is considered an export beer and not fit for consumption by Australians. And no plain old coffee: you must opt between items like Flat White or Short Black.
We found familiar sights: McDonald's, Hungry Jack (=Burger King), KFC, 7-11 stores and Starbucks coffee shops, all with somewhat different selections than we have in the US. However, we saw very few (if any) overweight people in Australia. We also noticed the lack of graffiti and the overall cleanliness - in cities, small towns as well as along the roads.
SunnyKen > The history of The Rocks as a mural in an alley. This historic area has nice restaurants and pricey shops on George Street, as well as (reportedly) the oldest pub in Australia...liquor license #1 from the 1860s, and nearly unchanged to this day.
This is also the area where Ken went on his quest for opals... not mining for them, just purchasing them. He learned all about black opals (not exported), white opals (which we can find in jewelry stores here), boulder opals, doubles, triples and all finer points - and ended up buying Sunny a beautiful pair of black opal earrings.
SunnyKen > In the harbour (it's not harbor, to be sure), we found this nicely restored threemaster, a beautiful foreground for the famous opera house.
The ship is reminiscent of times when British settlers and convicts arrived on the Australian shore. We learned that -contrary to the common notion - Sydney was not built around the penal colony of Botany Bay, but developed separately.
SunnyKen > The Harbour Bridge from the International Pier. For about AU$75.00, you can take the "Bridge Climb" - several hours of a guided tour climb atop the bridge. Reportedly one of the best views of Sydney is from that point, although we did not have time to try it.

SunnyKen > In one of the shopping arcades, we saw this neat store, the "Spirit of Down Under". Store manager Roger Clarke (on the right, talking to a friend) is half Aborigine, half Irish. He explained to us that Aborigine tribes in the different regions use unique patterns and symbols to decorate their boomerangs, didgeridoos and other wooden items.
SunnyKen > Roger Clarke and his didgeridoo. These are the hollow wooden instruments that makes hauntingly beautiful sounds. Roger gave us a demonstration of those sounds on the didgeridoo he was decorating by burning animal images into the wood.
